SILVER, Smooth, original outer case with probably the end of the 18th  century. 

Supplemented engraving inscription: 

"This curious watch  was a present from  CHARLES 2nd to SILVA EVELYN and from him has descended  through the family of the BISSHOPPS  to the present time.  On the dial it shows: The hour - The day  of the month - The moon's age - And the moon's phase. The stars as they pass The meridian Strikes the hours Works with a cat gut instead of  chain Requires winding up every 12  hours Is in perfect working order."

Gilt case in openwork design, decorated with fine vegetal tendrils, inside of front cover with central monogram "TB" with anchor flanked by winged hearts. 

Dial with Roman indexes on a silver chapter ring, two concentric circles displaying the lunar month and a central rotating disc with an opening for displaying the phase of the moon and a hand for reading the age of the moon. 

Gold-plated full plate movement with annular balance and floral balance bridge in ajour, striking the hour with hammer and bell, fusee and gut string. 

Professionally revised and restored (detailed restoration report enclosed). circuit board sign. total weight approx. 226.55g. D. 51 mm or 57 mm.

According to tradition, this pocket watch was a gift from Charles II to John Evelyn (Wotton 1620 - 1706). 

Evelyn, writer, architect and gardener, enjoyed great popularity at court. 

His work "Sylva", published in 1664, drew attention to the importance of afforestation for the first time. 

Sir Godfrey Kneller created a well-known portrait of Evelyn. 

His granddaughter Elizabeth Evelyn married Sir Simon Harcourt. 

According to family lore, the Earl of Rosebery presented this pocket watch to Sir William Harcourt in 1883, returning the watch to the Harcourt family.

An almost identical pocket watch by Thomas Chamberlain is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, inv. no. 8535-1863.

Provenance: The Harcourt Collection Sale, Sotheby's, June 10, 1993, lot 132; From an old southern German private collection.

Gilt metal pierced inner case. Silver dial with moon age and phases. A applies full plate movement with striking hour, fusee with cat gut instead of chain.
