A Louis XV style marquetry commode or chest of drawers of tomb-shaped form, the serpentine top echoed by the serpentine front apron, with two large drawers below two half-width drawers. The chest of drawers is veneered with kingwood and amaranth, the gilt bronze mounts cast with foliate and rocailles, the handles even displaying a pagoda -shaped form. The Rococo escutcheons with a fitting key, a playfully designed apron mount and beautifully intricately pierced Rococo cast mounts to the angles – correlating with the geometrical design of the marquetry. The top is of grey and white marble – creating a contrast in colour to the warm naturally accumulated patina of the wooden corpus and the gilt bronze mounts.
Comparative literature: Pierre Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Francais du XVIIIe siècle, Paris 2008, fig. 244a, 249.
Condition: very good, with a beautiful, naturally accumulated patina, wear consistent with age and use – detailed condition report on request
